I am further along than I let on. >.<

On this coming Monday, I am officially 15 weeks pregnant. I wrote these posts 2 months ago, wanting to share my thoughts and emotions with the world but not quite ready to yet since the common precedent is to wait until the first trimester is over to go public. I scheduled out my posts 2 months in advance and thought this would be a great way to say what I wanted to say without feeling like I was disclosing anything too early.

Well the first of those posts started to publish last week and I felt so odd. Here I was getting such great advice from my readers — but two months too late! So I’ve decided to fix all of the dates on my posts so that you are caught up to where I am — so that I can ask/answer questions in real time! I hope you all forgive me and take a peek at what’s been going on the past couple of months. :) And keep the comments and advice coming, they’ve been so helpful!

Here’s a quick cheat sheet to jump to some key moments:

Eat, Throw Up, Rinse, Repeat – A wonderful post on morning sickness, and how to deal with it.

Week 8 – Confirmation – My first visit to the OBGYN.

First Purchase – First baby purchase. >.<

Super Fit Mama? – Some thoughts about fitness & working out for two.

Week 12 – Perinatal Screening – The big first trimester screening… and a gender guess!

2nd Trimester Magic, Here I Come! – Waiting for the glowing to start…

At the risk of posting *too* much baby stuff, I have to proclaim to the world how excited I am about the Bugaboo X Missoni collaboration announced today. Available in July 2011, these fabric sets for the Bugaboo will be sold exclusively through Neiman Marcus and comes with an exclusive knit blanket.

I got a sneak peek at these at the Bugaboo offices (during a sneaky research trip) and they are so cute in person! The colors are very vivid and surprisingly unisex. I love the zig zag pattern on the Bumblebee but if we go with Bugaboo, the Cameleon will be more functional for what we want. I’m going to continue living in this wishful bubble, at least until the prices for these are announced. :)

But, to tide me over for now, maybe I’ll pick up a pair of Missoni ♥ Havaianas.

I’m so over the first trimester. Week after week I tell myself, “it will be over soon, the magical second trimester is coming up!” Naturally I thought it would start on week 12: 3 months, 12 weeks, makes sense right? When I found myself still as sick as a college student after too many shots of 151, I realized that the 12th week is actually the last week of the 3rd month, so one more week to go. Well, turns out your 2nd trimester doesn’t start until the 14th week and I am FINALLY here!

So, what’s changed?
Last night I finally slept through an entire night without getting up to pee once. I still woke up with intense back pain, mind you, and “an entire night” these days seem to max out at about 6 hours. I have a weird, salty metallic taste in my mouth that doesn’t go away, no matter how many Sour Patch Kids I suck on. I haven’t thrown up yet this morning, though I think I missed most of the morning since I just woke up. I feel a slight hint of what I think might be energy — who knows, I might finally do a prenatal pilates class today! Or walk the dogs! Or do cartwheels in the park. Okay, probably not the latter but I do feel like getting out and finally enjoying the sunshine.

More importantly, I wanted to do a round-up of all the things I’ve learned in the first trimester.

The Eating Healthy Thing
It’s so easy to think about eating healthy foods but when your appetite and cravings are controlled by a hormone-flooded crazed-female brain, you eat what you want, when you want. My first trimester diet consisted of instant noodles and Stouffer’s French Bread Pizza. I desperately wanted to eat healthier, but it was so difficult. Most cold meals were out of the question: no deli meats meant no more turkey sandwiches for lunch. Ordering a salad meant worrying about whether all the bacteria was properly rinsed off the greens. Or does this place make fresh Caesar dressing? If so, is there raw egg in this? My usual “safe” meal of salmon and brown rice got me thinking about my mercury intake. Most of my cravings have a pretty quick expiration of 30 minutes attached to them. By the time you go to the grocery store to buy ingredients, or head to a restaurant, sit down and order, the craving could turn into an aversion. The sad thing is that it becomes so much easier to eat instant, packaged foods when pregnant, a habit I hope to soon break if my nausea really does go away this week.

The Glowing Thing
Over the years it’s become common knowledge that pregnant women glow with beautiful skin and luscious hair. Apparently not the case in the first trimester. I’ve battled the most breakouts I’ve ever had at one time, dull skin and super sensitive/rashy spots on my chin and throat. Attractive, I know. My hair is also more oily than it’s ever been! I’ve had to completely adjust my skincare routine to keep it at bay.

The “Bump” Thing
Everybody thinks baby bumps are so cute — until they get one of their own. Probably because in the first trimester it’s not truly a baby bump, more like a flat tire around the belly! Shortly after finding out I was pregnant I quickly ballooned up around the midsection. It was just enough bloating to make my regular jeans a chore to button up (and uncomfortable too!). Good thing Spring and Summer are around the corner, I’m ready to stock up on dresses and thin leggings.

The Resting Thing
Everybody (books, friends and co-workers alike) tells you to rest up. Is this really an option? I am tired all day — in a physical, I-just-ran-a-marathon, out-of-breath kind of way. To make matters worse, I have the wildest, most vividly-detailed dreams that leave my brain completely drained in the mornings. To cope I’ve been sneaking off for 30-45 minute naps at work — we have a little dark room with a couch dedicated for breast-feeding and private phone calls. Without the nap, I typically crash as soon as I get home. I am tired of always being so tired!

Someone help me identify this tote on Karolina Kurkova… is it an updated version of the YSL downtown. (If so, do I need an upgrade?)

Once in a while the fashion and automotive worlds collide and we say who designed what? There hasn’t been any particularly production-ready collaborations, most of what we’ve seen are purely for press. (Though the Hermes Smart Car was really cute.)

Enter the 500 by Gucci, a collaboration with Fiat to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy and Gucci’s 90th anniversary. I have mixed feelings about this one — it’s one of the more well thought-out designs (rather than just slapping a logo and a weird paint job on the outside) but I have never been a fan of the Gucci stripes so I find it a little gawdy and forced. I do like the retro design inside and out, however, I think this type of collaboration/design would only work in Europe. (Can you imagine the dead-stares this little Fiat would get driving down Santa Monica Blvd?)

The 500 by Gucci will be more widely available than previous fashion/car collaborations, it will initially will be available from April 1 to June 30 exclusively by pre-order online, with a list price in Italy that starts from $23,500. The car also will be displayed in cities such as Paris, London and Tokyo, followed by the European commercial launch in July. It will then become available in the rest of the world at the end of the year.
