When it came time to choose paint colors for the house, I wanted to find colors that stood out on their own. We knew it would take us time to furnish the entire house so we didn’t want any of the rooms or areas to feel particularly empty.

We came up with a palette of soft neutral beige and light blue tones for most of the rooms but chose a bold, darker color for the media room (which shares a wall with the staircase). There was so much light coming into the room, we thought that darkening the room would make it easier to watch TV during the day. (That’s all that matters!! :P) I chose a paint color from Restoration Hardware called Flax. I thought this was the perfect backdrop to play with contrast.

In the corner we have a dark IKEA book case that holds all of my random school, work and photo books. On the top I put a framed picture of calla lilies that didn’t really go anywhere else in my house (:P) and two white vases from West Elm. The idea here was to put lighter colored pieces on top since the shelves were stacked full with “darker” books.

On the opposite wall I did just the opposite. (heh) I put up a clock from Crate & Barrel in the same color. It blends in really nicely in daylight and artificial light and the numbers are bright and easy to read, despite the background colors blending in.

I have to say that the colorful walls make it so much easier to decorate and achieve the look I want. Also, they make for photogenic pictures of the doggies!
