I went to a black and white party this weekend, it was only the second time I’ve been to a themed party. (I don’t even do Halloween parties.) My first time was a friend’s wedding where all of the guests were asked to wear green.
Anyways it was such an interesting experience that I felt the need to write about it. I think what probably made me think twice about what to wear is the fact that “black and white” is typically regarded as an indication of formal-wear. I wasn’t in the mood to gussy up in a white dress so I was trying to think of a casual alternative that wouldn’t look too bad if everyone else ended up gussied up in white dresses. So I checked the evite again, looking for clues. The party was at a rented out art gallery in Inglewood and promised a rocking DJ all night long. Okay, I doubt this will be a formal party. Inglewood?
So I ended up in a skinny black tank, black skinny pants and boots. Can’t go wrong, right? I glammed up my eyeliner and toned down the lip gloss. As soon as I entered the party, I realized every other girl probably experienced the same dilemma, with different results.
First of all, almost all of the girls were in white. I guess they all dressed to stand out but ended up blending in. =P The first couple of girls I saw were pretty casual… white mini-dresses, white tank and super short shorts… typical college clubbing attire, but in white. On the complete opposite end of the spectrum was a girl in an off-white gown and shawl — guess she glossed over the word Inglewood? My favorite outfit was probably a girl in a white tank and white wide-legged jeans — she really dressed to play up her proportions and looked great.
The guys, however, did not serve to be as much entertainment. Most guys copped out and came in a black dress shirt and black dress pants, some with the occasional white tie or vest. Others did a white shirt with a black vest. I felt like I was at a winter formal. There were a splattering of guys who dared to do the white on white, but not many.
So all in all it was pretty entertaining to see what outfits people came in, and even more interesting to try to guess how they came up with the outfit. What was the last themed party you went to, and what did you wear?

Actually, last NYE my then-roommates and I threw a James Bond/Casino Royale themed party. The guys looked great all dressed up, and of course the chicks went all out for the bond girl look; but no bikinis.
In college some of my friends would throw theme parties a couple times a semester– we did heaven/hell, Wild West, jungle, superheroes… and the list goes on.
Ahhh, takes me back to the good old days!
btw, wore thigh-high boots plus black minidress for NYE. One of my fav halloween costumes was pocahontas, actually, since I only had to braid my hair and no crazy dye jobs or wigs needed. suede boots plus quasi-suede dress I made with a friend, and it was all done.
Hi,
I have to Blog as an assignment for my English class so, this is my first blog I have ever posted (I know what you’re thinking… I do live under a rock). So I was given a sheet of websites that I could use and I eventually came around to a fashion site which led me to this one and I started reading your comment and I found it interesting because it just so happens that I was at a Halloween/ Duo-Birthday party so I thought it would be nice to put in a contribution to this conversation. This party I went to this past Saturday was a blast, most people were actually dressed up which is a surprise because I usually don’t see people even bothering with a costume. They had all kinds of funky costumes; I went dressed in a peacock costume that I had made myself last year for Halloween. This peacock costume is actually the first costume I ever made in my life and even though I don’t think it is the best thing out there I think it is still decent work, took me a long time to make that’s for sure. So as the party goes on, around 1 in the morning they hold a costume contest and I was fortunate enough to win first place, I thought it was an awesome experience to win that contest and receive a first place ribbon complemented by a 1.75 liter bottle of Jack Daniel’s, even though I don’t drink it was still nice. :p I would actually like to post a picture of my peacock costume up here and I would appreciate it if anyone would give me any opinions, good or bad. I will take any kind of comments, who ever does will be helping me out in becoming a better designer.
Well just like Natasha, I too am doing this as a part of my English assignment every week…so when you look at all my random posts..im not purposely trying to be annoying. Anyways the last themed party I went to was actually a black and white party as well. But since this party was a typical college club party the clothing styles were more predictable…and at this party the majority of guys and girls wore black there were some who wore both colors and some who wore white…but not any really who stuck out in the crowd.. but now that you mentioned it..i do not know why more girl did not wear all black.
What was the last themed party you went to, and what did you wear?
Well i have never been to a black and white party… but i plan to soon. Lately i have been partying in the hollywood clubs and theres one thats soon throwing a white and black party.
But i also have attended to a few theme parties. Like my prom..yes i know prom it was a masquerade and it was really nice. I had to buy a mask and i was dressed in a formal wear but it was looking real nice. This holloween coming up I’m attending a Holloween party at a club. i was there last week and it was a pre-halloween where several people whent dressed up. Most girls are just throwing some longerie and thats a costume. Only a few are really buying a costume that resembles something or some one. This holloween i plan to dress up as a dark fairy. I did not want to go like everyone else, but an actual costume. Its still short and sexy so I’ll be ready to mingle. lol I had been wanting to really dress up since the past two years i really havent done muych for this day of holloween. I just want to have fun and be wild about it.Its not everyday you get to dress up in a ridiculous outfit.lol
So that pretty much it for the coming up theme party i’ll be attending and girl you need to go out more and party. There is so many ways to have fun the same way there is so many parties!
