Large hoop earrings are one of those things that I feel I’ve inevitably grown out of. In my mind, it’s more of a high school or college “look”, especially on Asian girls. Once in a while I’ll see them on a girl with perfectly done hair and think to myself, “I wish I was young enough to be able to wear hoops and get away with it.” So although I’ve stayed away from round hoops for a good decade or so, I’ve found a couple of ways to get the dangling hoop “look” without the “youngness”.

These Gilded Ivy Earrings share a hoop’s rounded shape but have a much more mature drop. $48 at anthropologie.com.
Round plates are a good substitute to large, empty hoops. These speckled sea earrings have a muted texture and dangle at 1.5″ — not too long to be distracting. $28 at anthropologie.com.
These “Princess & Kitten” earrings resemble an elongated hoop, and is filled with a delightful mix of charms with a nod to nature. $48 at anthropologie.com.
Tiffany’s Elsa Peretti Open Heart Hoop earrings feature an oblong shape which softens the hoop look. $275 at tiffany.com.

Wear your hoop at the bottom with these Beth Lauren Crystal Ring dangling earrings. $115 at intermixonline.com.

oooooh i love the first three from anthropologie (surprise).
while i definitely see what you’re saying, in regards to college-aged kids wearing large hoops, i still think there’s a way to incorporate them into adult life. my criteria are size (not anything bigger than a silver dollar), color (real gold or silver, nothing cheapy) and hair (worn down. in a pony tail looks too youthful). all the options y0u chose however are amazing!
i usually agree with you CT, but what’s with the asian thing? i’ve seen every ethnicity wear hoop earrings.. and not just college-aged women either. maybe i just think that it’s a weird observation since i’m asian and college-aged and don’t wear large hoop earrings.
Although I have lost interest for hooped and all dangling earrings:
Favorite: First ones can be very versatile. I can picture them with casual/not so casual simple black/white outfits, but they would also compliment more colorful and maximalist outfits.
Least favorite: Tiffany’s ones. I think they’ll look weird and misshaped on the ear.
I love the tiffany’s open heart earrings! They are so simple and pretty. I am more of a simple person when it comes to style. Premiumpearl.com has some really nice, simple pearl and pendant earrngs.
Hi Ct.Are you Asian?I’m Chinese and find it hard to wear gold jewelry as it makes my skin look washed out.My colleague whos japanese has beautiful pale skin and can pull off both silver and gold. If you’re asian do you find it hard wearin gold? and if you dont mind telling where r u from? : )
im offended by your asian comment. all ethnicities wear hoops.
i hope you’re asian otherwise, that was rude.
I’m sorry if I offended anyone. I should clarify. Yes, I am Asian and what I meant to say is that I see this look flawlessly on “younger” Asian women but girls my age tend to avoid it because it looks silly. I have friends who can pull it off but myself, I look really, really young.
i agree with grace, some latinas wear some real big hoops, and the african american girls and the asian girls. i think its a good look depending on ur face structure and the way u have ur hair
shame on u CT for calling out only the “younger asian” girls :)
It’s CT’s personal opinion and she has a right to express it.After all she’s not saying anything degrading or racist…
Those earrings are really cute! Can anyone suggest some good sites for furniture purchase?
